X-Ray X-Mas Tree Is X-tra Neat

Nick Veasey is a mad scientist-photographer who x-rays everything that falls onto his hands, including a Boeing 777. He did a new series for these holidays: gifts and Christmas trees photographed with his giant x-ray machine.
With this artwork you will never have to wait again for December 25 to find out what is hiding under the tree.
The artist Nick Veasey from Kent, UK, has a penchant for X-raying inanimate objects to find out what is inside.
"It's probably every child's dream to be able to have X-ray vision and see inside the presents before the big day,” Nick told the Daily Mail.
"I suppose it's better than shaking them to listen to what they sound like, as that can cause problems."
Using a scanner ten times more powerful than those found in airports and hospitals, he created these intriguing shots of Christmas gifts.
From high heels to iPhones, dolls to spanners - with Nick around, you never have to be surprised again.

Surgeons Extract Pen In Woman's Stomach 25 Years After She Swallowed It

This woman swallowed a felt-tip pen in 1986. Back then, she told the doctor and her husband what happened, but they didn't believe her. Now, 25 years later, she went to another doctor and they found the pen intact inside her stomach.
In fact, the pen was still working after they surgically extracted it, using a "combined endoscopic and ear, nose and throat procedure under general anaesthetic."
The doctors detected the pen following an MRI examination prompted by another stomach illness.

Mammoths May Be Roaming the World In Five Years

Mammoths May Be Roaming the World In Five YearsScientists have been trying to clone woolly mammoths for years, but now they're really close. So close that in five years you may see herds of this gigantic beast—one of the favorite extinct prehistoric animals of the all-time.
Scientists from Japan's Kinki University and the Sakha Republic's mammoth museum have discovered well preserved marrow in a thigh bone discovered in Siberia, buried under the permafrost. The marrow is in such good condition that its cells' DNA could be used to replace the nuclei of elephant egg cells. This will allow scientist to create mammoth embryos.
The team wants to plant these embryos inside the wombs of elephant mothers so they can grow until birth. Although bigger than elephants, both animals are similar enough for this to work. This is a similar technique used in current cloning processes. The key is that the DNA has to be intact in order for this process to work. This discovery is their chance to achieve their objective.

StatCounter: Chrome Grabs 25.7% Of Global Market, Overtaking Firefox

chromeAccording to Web analytics company StatCounter, Google Chrome has surpassed Mozilla Firefox to become the second most used Web browser in the world after Internet Explorer.
I’m always a bit wary about StatCounter’s claims, but I would be very surprised if Chrome didn’t overtake Firefox at some point.
In the UK, Chrome bumped Firefox to the third place back in July 2011 (also according to StatCounter).
Indeed, the trends are crystal clear. StatCounter’s research arm, StatCounter Global Stats, reports that Chrome took 25.7 percent of the worldwide market last month (up from a mere 4.66 percent in November 2009) compared to Firefox’s 25.23 percent.

iPhone 4S, Can You Hear Me Now? Apple Sees Rise in Audio Bug Reports

Some of us are perfectly happy with the iPhone 4S — but it’s starting to feel like we’re in the minority.
First came “yellowgate” — reports of users who were seeing a golden tint on their screens. Next came “batterygate“; as Apple eventually admitted, some of the location services in iOS 5 (which comes pre-loaded on the 4S) were causing the battery to drain faster than normal. Last week, Siri, the intelligent voice assistant baked into the iPhone 4S, was unable to connect to its servers for the better part of a day.

One of the sources said Facebook is considering a buyout of Skype at a price of between $3 billion and $4 billion. Others pointed out that Skype’s IPO, which has been recently delayed by its new CEO until the second half of 2011, was expected to raise less than that, around $1 billion.

As we approach the expected mid-2011 launch for a few Chrome OS devices, it seems inevitable that some details are bound to slip out ahead of time -- here's looking at you, Acer ZGB and Seaboard. Apple Sues Samsung Over Galaxy; Are Other Tablet Makers Next?

In a patent suit filed Friday, Apple claims that Samsung’s line of Galaxy tablets and phones willfully infringe on its own patents. Apple is seeking injunctions as well as actual and punitive damages.
Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, which runs on Android, was released late last year. Apple claims the tab infringes on iPad patents and that the Galaxy S looks and feels a little too similar to the iPhone.

Samsung Plans to Release a 2GHz Dual-Core Smartphone by 2012

Two years have passed since the first 1GHz smartphones hit the market, and Samsung is already looking at the next big milestone in the smartphone gigahertz race: 2 GHz.
Such processor speed, Samsung claims, will narrow the gap between a smartphone and a full-fledged desktop PC, at least when it comes to data processing power.

Microsoft's raw deal for Vista users: IE10 for Windows 7 only

One of the minor "features" Microsoft included in the Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview released earlier this week was reduced operating system support; it will only install on Windows 7, leaving Windows XP and Windows Vista users out in the cold. Microsoft confirmed to Computerworld that this was no accident, with a spokesperson saying "Windows Vista customers have a great browsing experience with IE9, but in building IE10 we are focused on continuing to drive the kind of innovation that only happens when you take advantage of the ongoing improvements in modern operating systems and modern hardware."

Not Dead Yet: The Ultimate Guide to RSS in 2011

RSS is dead, they say! They, being all of you who now get your news, information, and various social updates from one of the many online platforms you subscribe to. But let it be said that all the Twitters, Facebooks, and Reddits in the world can't put a stake through the heart of the undying Really Simple Syndication feed. Commenting on the first view from space he reported, "The sky is very dark; the Earth is bluish. Everything is seen very clearly".

Android Will Rule Half of the Smartphone Market By 2012

Gartner predicts worldwide smartphone sales will reach 468 million units in 2011 and Android will command 38.5% of the smartphone market. By 2012, that rate will increase to 49.9%, but it will drop slightly to 48.8% by 2015.

Google adding touchscreen-friendly tweaks to Chrome OS, still has tablets on its mind -- Engadget

When a tablet version of Chrome OS was teased back in February of last year, we found it a legitimately exciting proposition. Now that we have Android's Honeycomb iteration designed specifically for slates, however, we're having to wonder just why Google's still chasing that keyboard-less dream with its web-centric OS.

Why Websites Are Slow & Why Speed Really Matters [INFOGRAPHIC]

What a difference a millisecond can make. When it comes to browsing the web, every tiny moment counts — and the fewer moments that pass between a mouse click and a fully loaded page, the better.
Speed is a bit of an obsession for most web users. We fret over our Internet connections’ and mobile connections’ perceived slowness, and we go bananas for a faster web browser.
